We’ve often dreamed about a modern vacation home surrounded by nature- and this escape in New Zealand may just be our dream realized. It brings together the best of both worlds- a simple and sleek space that fully embraces the lush landscape around it.
Designed by Herbst Architects, this bach (the term for a holiday home or beach house in New Zealand) is situated on a hillside just north of Auckland in a sleepy beach community. Wrapped in cedar boards, it’s a modern box that blurs the distinction between indoor and out with the use of large glass sliding walls, and a covered outdoor dining area (complete with fireplace).
The extensive use of wood and natural stone flooring on the interior also helps connect the home to its surroundings, and a bathroom that opens onto a private enclosed garden takes that connection even further. The furnishings chosen are very simple, as not to distract from the sweeping views and natural beauty of the home. It all results in a home that ‘s the perfect balance of natural materials, a serene location, and the clean lined simplicity of modern architecture. We’ll definitely be dreaming about a beach trip to this bach for a long time!
