How Self-Watering Planters Work
So how exactly does a planter water all by itself? The answer couldn’t be much simpler! Instead of a traditional pot that you water directly onto the soil, a self-watering pot contains a reservoir that you fill with water. That water is then absorbed into the soil from below, allowing the plant itself to take in as much water as it needs. The plant will then continue to soak up the remaining water whenever it’s thirsty – and you can sit back and relax. Depending on the type of plant, the water could last 1-3 weeks (great for anyone who may be traveling too). But the best part is, you’ll never have to worry about over or underwatering again!
Want to create your own self-watering setup? Fill a glass vase or bucket that is slightly larger than your pot. (Make sure the pot has a drainage hole and is not touching the bottom of the bucket to allow for water to sit). Then just place the pot in the container and let it water itself!
