Since their earliest advent, kitchens have come a long way. From a room that started with an open flame, and then was confined behind closed doors, kitchens are now the heart of our home, where we come together – to cook, eat, connect and spend more and more time. And just as this space has evolved over time, so have the way our kitchens look, feel and function. And major changes are also in order this year – as we share the biggest kitchen trends for 2023.

This year, many design trends we’ve previously highlighted (i.e. green kitchens) will continue to be popular choices. But you can also expect a whole lot of new ideas for the kitchen, in the form of colors, materials, appliances – and even in the ways we’ll be renovating. So let’s get to it, and clue you in on the 5 biggest kitchen trends for 2023.

BLACK CABINETRY

We’ve been fans of black kitchens for a few years now, but in 2023, the trend is really taking off. Dramatic dark cabinetry will create high contrast (without feeling like a big black hole) when paired with light colored floors, creamy countertops and pale wood tones. Not sure your style can accommodate this bold hue? Black  works with almost any other accent color and metal finish, and will easily translate to all sorts of design styles too – including this farmhouse modern kitchen designed by Light & Dwell.

MATCHING COUNTER & BACKSPLASH

Traditionally, counters and backsplashes have been treated as two different elements – with two different materials for each. But this year, kitchens will be embracing a seamless transition between surfaces. Matching counters and backsplashes offer a continuous look that also feels totally luxe, whether you opt for marble, quartz, Corian or a hybrid material like Silestone. And not to call ourselves trendsetters, but we opted for this treatment in our Los Feliz project kitchen, using a warm grey (and super-durable) quartzite.

REPLACING CABINET FRONTS

Yes, even kitchen renovation methods have trends. And for anyone looking for a re-do, the go-to option will be replacing cabinet doors with pre-made options. Instead of a full demo or removing cabinet doors and boxes, this saves time, money and effort (and who doesn’t love that combo?) Companies like Nieu and Semihandmade offer an array of options that can easily be customized to any style and size, and this easy way to update will be the preferred choice in 2023.

STATEMENT HOODS

From custom built in options, to dramatic scale, to luxe materials, this functional kitchen component is getting a renewed focus for 2023. The range hood will become even more of a focal point, contrasting against the walls and cabinetry for even more dramatic effect. We will also see plenty of shapes, rounded angles, and stone, wood and plaster versions that go well beyond the basic stainless steel we’re use to seeing.

COLORFUL RANGES

Cooking (and roasting, toasting and sautéing) just looks better in color. But walls and cabinetry aren’t the only places we will see a pop of color. Ranges will also get an injection of rainbow hues, from brilliant blues, to burgundy, green, and even lemon yellow. The pack all the features and functionality we’ve come to expect, with the added bonus of increased visual appeal. And we have no doubt they’ll be baking their way into plenty of kitchens.
