A great towel is one of life’s small daily luxuries. Stepping out of the shower into something thirsty, soft, and substantial is one of those tiny upgrades that changes how a whole bathroom feels.
The good news: you do not have to spend $50 a towel to get the spa experience. I have been testing budget towels for years, mostly because clients ask me about them constantly during bathroom remodels. The best ones on the market right now are shockingly affordable, sometimes under $15 a piece.
Here are the budget towels I actually use, recommend, and put in my own bathrooms.

What Makes a Good Towel (Even a Cheap One)
Before we get into the picks, a quick decoder. The four things that make a towel feel expensive:
Material
100% cotton is the standard. Turkish cotton has long fibers and dries fast. Egyptian cotton is plush and absorbent. Bamboo is silky and antibacterial. Avoid blends with polyester if you want a luxury feel; polyester repels water, which is the opposite of what a towel should do.
GSM (grams per square meter)
This is the towel weight. 300 to 400 GSM is light and quick-drying, great for the gym or hot climates. 500 to 700 GSM is the sweet spot for bath towels. 700+ GSM is plush and spa-like but takes longer to dry.
Weave
Loop length matters. Longer loops absorb more water but pill more easily; tighter loops are
more durable.
Hem and Stitching
The fastest way to spot a cheap towel is the hem. Look for double-stitched,
dobby-band hems. They are the difference between a towel that lasts five years and one that frays in
eight months.
Now the good stuff!

How to Wash Towels Without Ruining Them
Towels are the laundry item people get the most wrong. Here is how to make budget towels last. Wash on warm with detergent and zero fabric softener. Fabric softener is the silent killer of towels; it coats the fibers and reduces absorbency over time. Once a month, run a hot wash with one cup of white vinegar to strip out residue and reset the fibers. Tumble dry on medium heat with wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. Rotate two sets so the same towels are not getting hammered every week. Done right, even a $15 towel will last you four to five years.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the softest budget towel brand?
Costco Charisma and Quince Turkish Cotton are tied for me. Both feel like premium hotel towels at a fraction of the price.
Are Turkish or Egyptian cotton towels better?
Different strengths. Turkish cotton dries fast and gets softer over time. Egyptian cotton is plusher and more absorbent immediately. For most homes, Turkish is the better all-rounder.
How often should I replace bath towels?
Every two to five years depending on use and care. If a towel still smells musty after washing, it has lost the battle and needs to be retired.
Why do new towels not absorb water well?
New towels are coated with fabric finishers that get washed out over time. Wash them in warm water with a cup of vinegar before first use to strip the coating and unlock the absorbency.
What is the best GSM for budget towels?
500 to 600 GSM is the sweet spot. Plush enough to feel luxurious, light enough to dry between uses,
and forgiving on a budget.
A bathroom redo does not have to mean a renovation. Swap your bath towels, your hand towels, and your bath mat with picks from this list, and your bathroom will feel completely different by the weekend. Budget towels have come a long way. The right ones rival the luxury versions for a third of the price.
