The Designer Starter Pack: The 10 Living Room Essentials You Need

Living Room Essentials

So you’ve got an empty living room and zero idea where to start. Maybe you just moved. Maybe you finally got rid of that college futon situation. Maybe you’re starting fresh after a breakup and the only thing left is the TV mount. Whatever brought you here, I’ve got you!

I’ve furnished hundreds of living rooms over the years, and I can tell you: the difference between a room that feels “done” and one that feels like a waiting area at a dentist’s office comes down to about 10 categories of stuff. Not 50. Not 100. Ten. Get these right and your living room works. Skip any of them and something always feels off.

For every category, I’m giving you my picks at three price points: budget (let’s call it the “just moved” tier), mid-range (the “I have a job now” tier), and splurge (the “treat yourself” tier). Every product here is one I’d genuinely put in a client’s home. Let’s go find your living room essentials!

The Sofa

This is the most important purchase you’ll make. A bad sofa ruins everything. A good one carries the room. Here’s what to look for: solid wood frame (not particle board), high-density foam or down-wrapped cushions, removable covers if you have pets or kids, and a depth between 36 and 40 inches for actual comfort.

Budget (Under $800)

Article Hansen Sofa | $799

Clean lines, solid wood legs, and it doesn’t look like it costs what it costs. The gray upholstery option works with everything, too.

Mid-Range ($800-$2,000)

Article Sven Sofa in Charme Tan | $1,699

I’ve recommended this sofa more times than I can count. The leather ages beautifully, and the mid-century profile works in almost every style.

Splurge ($2,000+)

7th Ave Three Seater Sofa | $3,475

Performance fabric, modular configuration, and it’s deep enough to actually nap on. This is the sofa you buy once and keep for 15 years.

The Coffee Table

Your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa and 16-18 inches tall (same height as your seat cushions). Round tables work better in small spaces. Rectangular tables work better with sectionals.

Budget

Better Homes & Gardens Juliet Coffee Table | $129

3 different finish options, clean profile, and a shelf underneath for storage. Genuinely good for the price.

Mid-Range

Castlery Casa Box Coffee Table | $399

Simple, streamlined, timeless, and it works with just about any style.

Splurge

CB2 Crescent Travertine Coffee Table | $1,799

Natural stone. Statement piece. The kind of table people walk into and immediately comment on.

The Rug

I’m going to say this once: your rug is too small. If your furniture isn’t sitting on it, it’s not a rug, it’s a bath mat. For most living rooms, you want an 8×10 or a 9×12. Front legs of all major furniture should be on the rug at a minimum.

Budget

Rugs USA Moroccan Diamond Shag | $319 (8×10)

Texture, warmth, and it hides everything. The ivory/cream option is my go-to.

Mid-Range

Loloi Chris Loves Julia Rosemarie Rug |  $529 (8×10)

Vintage-inspired pattern that adds depth without competing with your furniture. The olive and natural colorway is gorgeous.

Splurge

Pottery Barn Morro Handwoven Wool Rug | $999 (8×10)

Hand-knotted. The kind of rug that looks better the longer you own it.

Lighting: Floor Lamp

Every living room needs at least three light sources. If you only have one overhead fixture, your room looks flat. A floor lamp next to the sofa is non-negotiable.

Budget

Ebern Designs Arched Floor Lamp | Wayfair  | $110

Simple arc lamp. Does the job, looks clean.

Mid-Range

West Elm Astra Floor Lamp  | $399

The classic overarching lamp, with a bit more design. Provides ambient light over the sofa without taking up end table space.

Splurge

Visual Comfort Mia Floor Lamp | $799

Sculptural, beautiful, and the light quality is noticeably warmer.

Lighting: Table Lamps

You need two. One for each end of the sofa, or one on a console and one on a side table. They don’t have to match, but they should feel related.

Budget

Target Wren Table Lamp | $75

Ceramic base in a warm tone. Looks twice its price.

Mid-Range

Crate & Barrell Remi Table Lamp  | $399

Modern look, linen shade. It’s the lamp I put in almost every project.

Splurge

Kelly Wearstler Cleo Orb Lamp | Visual Comfort | $699

An art piece that also lights your room.

Throw Pillows

The fastest, cheapest way to change the entire feel of a room. Rules: mix sizes (20×20 and 22×22 together), mix textures (velvet + linen + something with a pattern), and always use down-filled inserts. Always.

Square Cotton Woven Stripe Throw Pillows | Target | $20

Mid-Range

Budget alternative that still looks great.

Curtains

They go to the floor. Always. Even in the living room. Hang the rod 4-6 inches above the window frame and 6-8 inches wider on each side. This makes windows look taller and wider than they are.

Budget

IKEA DYTAG Linen Curtains | $89 a pair

Mid-Range

West Elm European Flax Linen Curtain | $139 a panel

Splurge

Pottery Barn Emery Linen Box Pleat Curtain | $289 a panel

Side Tables

At least one next to the sofa. Surface within arm’s reach is a rule. Nobody wants to hold their drink for two hours.

Budget

Round End Table | Wayfair | $47

Simple, classic, goes with everything.

Mid-Range

West Elm Chadwick Mid-Century Side Table | $259

Classic Mid-Century style, and it looks expensive.

Sculptural and heavy. The kind of piece that anchors a corner.

Art And Wall Decor

One large piece or a gallery wall. Not one small frame floating in the middle of a 12-foot wall. Scale matters more than the art itself.

Budget

Society6 Large Canvas Print | $105

Affordable, huge selection, and you can get massive sizes.

Mid-Range

Frameology Bobby Berk Classic Stack Collection | $179

Gallery wall kit with frames and mats included. Takes the guesswork out.

Splurge

Bobby Berk Obscured Pleats Art | Wayfair | $897

Shameless plug. But it’s genuinely beautiful.

Command Picture Hanging Strips | Amazon | $9

No holes. No commitment. No excuses.

Bobby’s One Splurge Pick

If I had to tell you to spend real money on one single thing in your living room, it would be the sofa. Everything else can be swapped, upgraded, and refreshed over time. But a sofa you love sitting on changes how you feel about your entire home. Invest there. Save everywhere else.
