How To Create A Fresh Take On Farmhouse Style: My New Project

Farmhouse has become one of the most popular and widely used design styles over the past decade. By now, we’ve all seen the wide plank floors, shiplap, and rustic finishes. But how do you give this established look a bit of a new twist? My latest project demonstrates how to create a fresh take on farmhouse style, with plenty of ideas you can incorporate into your own home!

Part of the Tri Pointe Homes Context at Oakhurst community in Charlotte, North Carolina, this 1,695-square-foot townhome is my modern take on a farmhouse look. Instead of sticking to all the trademarks of this design style, I incorporated some fresh ideas. Want to know how you can do the same in your own space? Let’s take a closer look. (I’ve also compiled a shoppable round-up of fresh farmhouse furnishings and accessories from this design.)

Keep Your Kitchen Monchromatic

A farmhouse kitchen may bring to mind lots of rustic wood, but in this project, I went for something much cleaner and simpler. White shaker-style cabinets paired with grey quartz countertops create a monochromatic take on the farmhouse look. The waterfall edge on the island also brings in a modern detail; however, I didn’t want to go too modern – so I stayed true to this style with a large farmhouse-style sink and a brass gooseneck faucet.

Bring In Woven Textures

Texture is one of my go-tos for creating depth, dimension, and interest – especially when it comes to farmhouse style. This dining area needed an extra layer and to be “roughed up” with some coarseness, so I chose dining chairs with a woven rattan back. I also brought in lots of woven textures through baskets, pillows, and throws throughout the home.

Add Some Sumptuous Leather

Leather isn’t the first material that comes to mind when you think farmhouse, but I think it’s a perfect fit! Adding a caramel leather sofa brought a ton of warmth to the living room and helped to break up all the white and wood in this open floor plan. Any leather in a rich brown tone, from a vintage distressed armchair to a woven pillow, to barstools, can be a great addition to a farmhouse interior.

Go For Shades of Green

Green is an ideal shade for evoking nature, pairing with warm shades of wood, and contrasting with white. So I brought it into this farmhouse project liberally. In the primary suite, I gave the walls a coat of sage green, brought in green accent pillows, and even extended it into the bathroom. In other spaces, green throws, rugs, and art bring in colorful accents.
