If you’re a millennial (like Bobby), then you probably have vivid memories of the Y2K scare, bootcut jeans, and the rise of bubblegum pop. It’s likely you also recall the interior design trends that dominated the early and mid-2000s, and you may be wondering, are the most memorable millennial design trends actually still in style or totally outdated? Before you donate any of your old furnishings, keep reading to see Bobby weigh in – and share what he considers to be in and out.
Millennial Pink – Still In Style, But…
Bobby is definitely still a fan of the ubiquitous shade of pink (and most shades of pink), but he does have one caveat: “It should be used selectively. An entire pink room is no longer the vibe.”
Edison Bulbs – Outdated
“Edison bulbs are a big no! These used to be in every bar and restaurant, and while I do like the light quality they emit, these are definitely outdated.”
Himalayan Salt Lamps – Still In Style, But…
Bobby’s take? Salt lamps are a fun bohemian accent, but stick to the natural style- and avoid if you have a cat. “I’m not into a salt lamp that has been carved into a shape or design. Plus, cats can lick them, causing sickness.”
Snake Plants – Still In Style
“I still love a snake plant. Not only does it help purify the air, it’s also one of the easiest plants to care for and can thrive with very little light.”
NEON/LED SIGNS – Still In Style, But..
Bobby thinks neon signs are still fun for kids’ rooms and in more playful spaces, but they have mostly had their moment. “It’s not a feature I think works or looks great in most interiors.”
GREY INTERIORS – Outdated
“Grey can absolutely be used in interiors, but an all-grey room just feels a bit sad and cold to me.”
faux fur – Still In Style, But…
“I think faux fur can be a great ethical alternative and cozy element in design. However, I think it only works when it is a natural color. No pinks, greens, or bright tones!”
TEXT & QUOTE ART – Outdated
Bobby firmly believes that text, words, and inspirational quotes DO NOT belong on your walls. “I was never a fan of this style, and I never will be.”
Gold & Brass – Still In Style
Gold and brass are still a great look, according to Bobby. He often uses these for lighting, hardware, and accessories. “Just avoid using too much gold in a room because it becomes a bit tacky,” he advises.
Macrame – Still In Style
“Macrame really took off in the ’60s and ’70s, and then had a resurgence in the 2010s. I think it’s still a beautiful accent in the right space, and I love woven textures.”
