Resources For Those Affected By The LA Wildfires

Photo: Noah Berger/AP

The LA Wildfires have caused immense destruction, burning thousands of acres and destroying so many homes and businesses. My heart goes out to everyone affected, especially those who have lost their home and the heroic firefighters who continue to battle to contain the blazes.

For those who have suffered loss on any level, it can be challenging to know where to begin picking up the pieces. There are many resources in place that offering aid, and I’ve compiled some valuable resources to help you get started – and get the support you need.  I’m also sharing a special way to commemorate your home, how to make sure your GoFundMe isn’t affecting other aid, and how you can continue to help with relief efforts down the road.

Many Los Angeles residents have had to evacuate their homes and have not been able to return. The Los Angeles Fire Department has created these interactive maps that allow you to search your address, and see if your residence sustained damage or was destroyed.

In the event that you lost your home or apartment, there are some clear steps you should take. Start by registering with FEMA for disaster assistance. You can also visit one of 2 Disaster Recovery Centers for help and to sign up for all available resources.

You should also call. your Homeowners/Rental Insurance and trigger a “Loss of Use”. Doing so will begin the process of receiving payments for necessary living expenses since your home is no longer uninhabitable.

Next, forward your mail to your temporary residence, or set up a P.O. Box at your closest post office.

Start to search for a long-term rental. (You can also receive free temporary housing through Airbnb.)

You will also want to begin itemizing all your belongings that were lost. If you have any photos of your home and interior, consult those to help you jog your memory. Set up a spreadsheet with item info and cost. You should also take photos of damaged items (if it is safe to do so).

Losing your home can feel like losing a member of your family. To help memorialize it in a very special and beautiful way, LA artist Asher Bingham is offering to create a drawing of your home for free. Just send them a DM on Instagram and they will be in touch!

If you (or a friend or family member) have created a GoFundMe to help with recovery, you should know that your fundraiser may affect your FEMA assistance. FEMA help cannot duplicate assistance for specific needs received from GoFundeMe. Read this article to learn more.
