The Best Trader Joe’s Wines Under $15

Best Trader Joe's Wines Under $15

I went to a wine class last year where the sommelier opened a bottle, poured a small taste, and asked the class to guess the price. Everyone in the room thought around $35 to $45. The sommelier laughed. “Trader Joe’s Reserve. Fourteen dollars.”

The TJ’s wine section has gotten serious in the last few years. The Reserve series in particular is producing bottles that punch well above their price. The everyday wines are still there for $5 to $9 if you want them, but the real action is in the $14 to $20 Reserve range.

Here is the list of the best Trader Joe’s wines under $15 that I work from. (And a few worth-the-extra-five-dollars Reserve picks at the end.)

What to Skip

Charles Shaw

I had it in college. I have moved on. The price gap between $3 and $10 is bigger than the price gap between $10 and $30. The $10 bottles are where the value lives.

TJ’s Wine in a Box

Fine for a hike or a beach. Fine. Not great. The box format does not produce wine that holds up to a real dinner.

Most TJ’s Roses Under $10

The category has improved, but the under-$10 rosés tend to be sweet and one-dimensional. Spend $14 on a TJ’s Provence-style rosé instead.

Most TJ’s “Limited Release” Novelty Wines

The witch-themed pinks for Halloween, the ghost-labeled reds, the holiday-themed novelty wines. The labels are

great. The wine is rarely worth the trip.

How to Actually Shop The Wine Aisle

A few rules:

The Reserve label is the upgrade signal. Look for the Reserve word on the bottle. The wines below it are pricier, but they meaningfully outperform the everyday range.

Avoid wines below $5. Some are fine. Most are not. The wine math at this price point rarely works.

If a bottle has a great label and a low price, be skeptical. The novelty wines are designed to be picked up. The wine is often the afterthought.

Ask the staff. The TJ’s wine staff in many stores is genuinely knowledgeable. They will tell you what is good and what is overhyped.

What to Bring to a Dinner Party

Three reliable choices.

Sunshine Mountain Pinot Noir ($14) if you want the best ratio of price to “looks expensive.”

Diamond Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($14) for a steak dinner.

La Burgondie Crémant ($12) for a celebratory aperitif.

Wrap any of these in kraft paper with ribbon, and the bottle reads expensive.
