Year Of Improvement: How To Embrace Change

There are very few things in life that are inevitable. Change is one of them. The world is in a constant state of movement (literally) and so is every aspect of our lives. Whether it’s a new year, a new job, or just a new experience, things never remain the same for long, and thus, we need to learn how to embrace change. While it can feel daunting and anxiety-inducing, it’s also an opportunity to grow, refresh, and make things better. So for our last installment in the “Year of Improvement” series, let us provide you with 6 tips for how to not just embrace change, but use it to improve your life too.

Notice How You React To Change

We all develop patterns and habits in reaction to what occurs in our lives. Start to take note of how you deal with change. Do you push back? Do you look for someone to blame? Do you put your head down and wait for the moment to pass? Understanding the effect change has on you will help you start to cope better.

Be Flexible

Not everything will go according to plan, and that’s okay! In design, sometimes you have to adapt when materials or timelines shift. In life, being flexible allows you to pivot and make the best of what’s happening instead of resisting it.

Reframe Your Perspective

Think of change as a chance to reset or refresh. Just like a room makeover, it’s not about erasing the past—it’s about building on what’s already there to create something even better. Ask yourself: what’s exciting about this new chapter? What opportunities does it bring? How can I use it to my advantage?

Recognize What You Can (and Can’t) Control

Some things in life are beyond our control. That’s a simple fact. The seasons will continue to change, time will pass, and we will all get older. When you hold onto – or resent – changes that are out of your control, you create unnecessary stress. Let go of that control and focus on what you can have control over.

Develop A Mindset of Growth

Truly embracing change also means changing the way you think. For many of us, the thought of disruption or newness can feel like a threat to our comfort zone. (And it’s absolutely normal to feel this way.) However, if you retrain your brain to view changes as a way to grow, learn, and develop new skills, change will become an opportunity instead of an inconvenience.

Seek Out Support

Even when you are flexible and open to change, it can still be challenging. That’s why it is also important to talk to friends, family, or a licensed therapist when you are dealing with tumultuous times. Support can be crucial to staying positive and not letting change take a toll on your mental health.
