I’ve furnished hundreds of living rooms over the years, and I can tell you: the difference between a room that feels “done” and one that feels like a waiting area at a dentist’s office comes down to about 10 categories of stuff. This is the most important purchase you’ll make. A bad sofa ruins everything. A good one carries the room. Here’s what to look for: solid wood frame (not particle board), high-density foam or down-wrapped cushions, removable covers if you have pets or kids, and a depth between 36 and 40 inches for actual comfort.

The Coffee Table

Your coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa and 16-18 inches tall (same height as your seat cushions). Round tables work better in small spaces. Rectangular tables work better with sectionals.

I’m going to say this once: your rug is too small. If your furniture isn’t sitting on it, it’s not a rug, it’s a bath mat. For most living rooms, you want an 8×10 or a 9×12. Front legs of all major furniture should be on the rug at a minimum.
