How To Create A Modern House On The Prairie: My Newest Project

Modern House on the Prairie

We can all imagine the quintessential “little house on the prairie.” But when designing this new project, I took the prairie house in a much more modern direction. Think rustic woods, natural tones, and artwork depicting the heartland, paired with sleek furniture and black accents. Let’s take a look at my modern house on the prairie!

This is no Little House on the Prairie! Part of the Tri Pointe Homes Luminary at Outlook community in Winchester, California, this 1,941-square-foot home is a modern farmhouse at its best. Classic details like wood paneling have been paired with black accents and sculptural furniture for this updated take on a classic American style. And I’m sharing all the tips – and shoppable products – you need to translate this look in your very own home

Add An Array Of Black Accents

Black is my go-to for creating a modern feel in any room. In this project, I used it throughout the living room to bring in that “edge” and create some compelling contrast. The round black coffee table, black and cane chairs, and the black table lamp all help achieve that, while still engaging with the more traditional design elements used.  And like this room, remember to use some restraint when bringing in dark tones so they don’t totally overpower.

Welcome In Wood

Wood tones are certainly not out of place in a prairie-inspired interior. But how you use wood and what you pair it with can create more modern results. In the primary suite, I took the wood tones up the wall, creating an engaging accent behind the bed, and gave it a modern interpretation when paired with black nightstands and a clean upholstered bed. This wood also brings in so much warmth, making it an ideal addition to a cozy bedroom.

Let Natural Shades Set The Tone

The inspiration for the colors in this home? The prairie, of course! The primary bathroom got a coat of pale green inspired by a grassy field, and a guest bedroom got a bit of light brown and tans taken from dried grasses and patches of earth. There are also plenty of natural shades found in the artwork, from close-up photography to abstract images.
