Simple sustainable hacks

1. CUT OPEN A BOTTLE TO GET EVERY LAST DROP

Though a bottle of soap, shampoo, or lotion may seem empty, there is usually quite a bit of product left at the bottom. While it’s difficult to impossible to reach with the pump, if you simply cut the bottle in half with a pair of heavy-weight scissors, you can scoop out every last drop, not waste any product, and prevent yourself from purchasing prematurely.

2. USE OLD FACE MASKS AS TWISTIE TIES

After wearing a face mask, you’ve probably just tossed it into the trash. But there’s actually a handy organization tool hidden inside. Cut open the top and bottom portions and you’ll discover the flexible metal band that allows you to contour the mask to your face. Just remove the piece and it can be used as a twistie tie! Plus, you can use this program to recycle your masks.

3. MAKE A STAIN INTO A FASHION STATEMENT

You’ve spilled oil or another liquid on your favorite t-shirt, and even after treating the stain and washing, it still won’t come out. Don’t toss it just yet. Use the same substance to make more marks on the shirt, creating a new pattern (and a fashion statement). If the stain is a total eyesore and can’t be saved, there’s also the eco option to turn the tee into a cleaning rag.

4. USE PAPER TOWEL & TP TUBES AS ORGANIZERS FOR CORDS

Americans use an average of 23 rolls of toilet paper and 80 rolls of paper towels per person every year! And that’s a lot of leftover cardboard tubes. Before you discard them, put them to use as organizers for extra cords. Extension cords and charging cords can be securely stored inside the roll, and then labeled on the outside for easy access!

5. SAVE PASTA JARS FOR STORAGE

The glass jars that pasta sauce is packaged in can seriously come in handy all over your house. Instead of recycling, simply rinse them out, remove the labels, and use them as airtight storage for everything from screws to snacks to soap.

6. DITCH YOUR DRYER SHEETS

Dryer sheets are a major contributor to waste and landfills worldwide – to the tune of millions and millions tossed every day. So instead of these single-use polluters, opt for eco-friendly wool dryer balls. This natural wool solution can be used for hundreds of loads of laundry, and will actually help your laundry dry faster while reducing wrinkles and static too!
