The honest review post nobody wants to write, but everyone wants to read.
Trader Joe’s has formed half my pantry over the last decade. It has also produced, by my count, somewhere around fifteen items I bought repeatedly, then quietly stopped buying without telling anyone.
Some are products I still see on the shelf and walk past. Some are products that got discontinued and that I now reference with genuine grief.
This is the list of the Trader Joe’s products I stopped buying. The breakups, in their honest forms.

Trader Joe’s Products I Stopped Buying
The “I Bought this for Years” Category
I am about to alienate half of TJ’s loyalists. The Cookie Butter is too sweet. Eaten by the spoonful, it is a sugar headache in real time. Spread on toast, it is candy disguised as breakfast. I went a year buying a jar a month, then realized I had not opened the last three. Done.
Iconic. Cheap. Drinkable in college. As an adult with functional taste buds, the gap between Two-Buck Chuck and a $14 TJ’s Reserve bottle is too wide to ignore.
CAULIFLOWER PIZZA CRUST
Sounded good in theory. The crust is rubbery. The flavor is off. The promise of “low-carb pizza” is not delivered. Make a real pizza or buy a real frozen pizza.
Mediocre. The sauce is thin. The noodles are mushy. The same money buys you a box of pasta and a block of Unexpected Cheddar that produces a far better dinner.
VEGETABLE LASAGNA
The sauce is the weak point. Tastes flat. The cheese ratio is off. There are five better lasagnas in the freezer aisle of any grocery store.

The “This Product Changed and is Worse” Category
GREEK YOGURT (THE NON-STRAINED AND CREAMY VERSION)
The plain Greek yogurt was a TJ’s staple for years. The current version is thinner and less tangy than I remember. The non-strained creamy version is still a winner. The plain version, I no longer buy.
The original was great. Some recent batches have been worse than I remember. Could be palate inflation on my end. Either way, I do not buy them anymore.
CRACKERS (THE MULTIGRAIN ONES)
Used to be a regular. The recipe seems to have shifted. Texture is different. I switched to plain water crackers from another brand.

The “This is Fine, But I Outgrew it” Category
Fine. Not bad. I buy the bag of shredded frozen hash browns now and crisp them in a pan. Better texture, better flavor, same price.
Specifically the flavored ones. Pumpkin spice, vanilla, salted caramel. They are sugar bombs. I switched to plain oat milk plus a little vanilla extract.

The “Nobody Asked for This” Category
MOST “LIMITED EDITION” PUMPKIN ITEMS
Pumpkin pasta sauce. Pumpkin trail mix. Pumpkin tortilla chips. The pumpkin cycle gets out of control every September. The pumpkin bread is the only one I buy now. Everything else, skip.
“KRINGLE” CAKE (AND SIMILAR HOLIDAY NOVELTY CAKES)
Tastes like a sugar headache.
MOST OF THE BOTTLED SMOOTHIES
Sugar disguised as health food. The fruit-and-yogurt versions are particularly misleading. Make your own with frozen fruit and Greek yogurt.

The Discontinued Items I Miss
This is the section that hurts.
THE ORIGINAL SPECULOOS COOKIE BUTTER
Wait, did I just complain about the Cookie Butter being too sweet? Yes. The original Speculoos was less sweet. Better balanced. I miss the original.
THE TRUFFLE MARCONA ALMONDS
Real grief. They were perfect. They disappeared.
THE CINNAMON BUN SPREAD
Disappeared and resurfaces erratically. If you see it in stock, buy two.
COOKIE BUTTER ICE CREAM
Came back, then went again. I will never recover.
THE MOCHI (SPECIFICALLY THE GREEN TEA FLAVOR)
Reformulated. Different texture. Disappointing.

What I Learned from this List
Three things.
The hype cycle at Trader Joe’s is real and it warps perception. Just because something goes viral on TikTok does not mean it is going to age well in your kitchen.
Formulas change quietly. The product on the shelf today may not be the product that was there two years ago. The fans of the original product remember. The new shoppers do not know what they missed.
You can love Trader Joe’s and still have items you do not buy. The store is best when you build a personal list and ignore the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most controversial pick on this list?
The Cookie Butter. I know.
Have you tried it again recently to confirm?
Yes. Still too sweet for me.
Best replacement for the Cookie Butter if you want a similar product?
Biscoff cookie butter (the original). Slightly less sweet. Available at most major grocery stores.
Anything you stopped buying then started buying again?
The Greek Yogurt Cream Top. Tried other brands, came back.
What’s the most important rule for shopping TJ’s?
Build a personal list. Ignore the hype. Buy what works for your kitchen, not what is trending on the internet.
