In the world of interior design, there are millions of choices when it comes to designing and furnishing your home – and finding what works for you and your space can feel daunting. How do you avoid options that are overly trendy, dated, or instantly out of style? We have a good place to start. Consider these 9 timeless design choices that will always work – and are absolutely Bobby-approved.
1. Paper Lanterns
Paper lanterns have been around for hundreds of years, starting in Japan and China and reappearing in Western design thanks to Isamu Noguchi in the 1950s. To this day, they remain a versatile, easy, and timeless lighting choice – including one we added to the Bobby Berk office!
2. Chrome
Chrome is actually a thin layer of chromium that is electroplated onto another metal, creating a shiny finish. While it’s certainly having a resurgence in design atm, we think this sleek-looking surface is always a good look for kitchen and bath hardware, shelving, surfaces, and furniture.
3. White Marble
Whether it’s Calacatta, Carrara, Thassos, or Bianco, white marble is an interior staple. It will always be a classic choice for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, and any surface you wish to create an elevated and luxurious look.
4. Oak Flooring
Wide plank oak flooring is a go-to for Bobby and our design team – and for good reason. It’s a versatile choice that can feel rustic, modern, minimal, or traditional. Consider it a great option when you’re considering flooring that will stand the test of time for both durability and design.
5. Neutrals
Bobby has never met a shade of white, tan, or gray that he couldn’t work with. Why? Because neutrals are infinitely versatile, soothing and always in style. (In fact, he has plenty of ideas for making neutrals more exciting too.)
6. Roman Shades
For a window treatment that has versatility and staying power, consider the simple roman shade. It does come in varying versions, but we’re partial to the classic flat fold for a clean and tailored look.
7. Velvet
Lustrous and luxe, velvet is an appealing fabric that has been around for a couple of thousand years, and solid velvet upholstery, pillows, and curtains will probably continue to be an interior for another thousand. Plus, there are now performance velvet fabrics with built-in durability and stain-resistant technology, making it even more appealing!
8. White Bedding
There’s a reason that every hotel uses white bedding: It’s crisp, clean, and classic. Whether you opt for linen, percale, sateen, or even bamboo, white sheets and duvets are a great investment that will help you sleep in style for years and years. (Worried about stains? Here’s our guide for how to wash all your bedding.)
9. Woven Natural Materials
Another ancient technique that has proven timeless, woven natural materials such as jute, wicker, rattan, and raffia are all excellent interior additions. They can take the form of baskets, wallcoverings, rugs, or furniture, and while the actual design of these items may change with the times, the materials themselves will always be appealing.
