The holidays may be over, but I’ve got a gift that keeps on giving: a new episode of ‘Junk or Jackpot?”. So let’s see how I help another collector pare down their collection and curate new spaces in their home.
In episode 2, “Game Over-haul”, I’m helping Johnny and Carlie, a couple who both have some serious collections. Carlie is crazy about Star Wars and Disney and has an enviable amount of figurines, while Johnny loves video games and memorabilia. The couple thought they would not be able to have children, so they poured their money and resources into their childlike interests. But then, they had their son JD, and their priorities have now started to shift. So it was my job to help them clear out some of their collections to create a more family-friendly home.
Pssss. Don’t miss my full recap of Episode 1 with Patrick, too!
‘JUNK OR JACKPOT?’: JOHNNY & CARLIE
BEFORE
This mish-mash room in Johnny and Carlie’s home housed Star Wars collections and exercise bikes. And they had so many display cases that they were starting to cover up a window!
In the family room, display cases were stuffed with collections and figurines.
The family room seating – reclining leather loungers- wasn’t really suited to a family at all. And that brick fireplace was not my favorite.
Upstairs, Johnny had a massive collection of video games and memorabilia in his office. Since it was meticulously organized, this room didn’t need to be touched at all (but he did sell quite a few items from here to finance the makeover downstairs).

AFTER
The “collections room” got a gorgeous makeover that made it so much more functional. The display cases have been curated, and a new seating area and game table will allow Johnny and Carlie to actually enjoy this space. We also added some custom shadow boxes on the wall above the sofa to highlight some of their favorite items.
The family room is now somewhere a family will actually want to spend time! I started by covering up the brick fireplace for a modern, new look and painting the room. The existing display cabinets worked well, so we just added a custom wood panel to make them look more high-end. Then, a big comfy sofa and some personal art from the couple’s son JD, finish off the transformation.
Stay tuned next week for episode 3 of ‘Junk or Jackpot?’
