You’ve now seen the reveal of all the spaces at Bobby Berk HQ – including the Exterior. But there’s still a lot more to discover! The exterior consists of much more than just beautiful furniture. From hardscaping to landscaping, we re-did just about every square inch of the exterior – and it’s time to show you how it all came together.
The exterior took a whole lot of planning, construction, and landscaping. So how did it all come together? You’re about to find out – as we share the design details, landscaping plan, and LOTS of before and afters.

Backyard BEFORE
As you can see, the backyard used to be a perfectly fine (but very dated) space. However, it was lacking a unified and elevated look that would also match the re-designed interiors. A small terracotta and concrete patio area was the only spot that allowed for seating, and while the grass was nice, it wasn’t the best use of the space for our needs (or an ideal feature in part of the country where water is at a premium.) A brick retaining wall and fountain were functional but hardly fashionable. Plus, the sloped part of the backyard was being completely underutilized – not used at all, actually – and didn’t have any real landscaping. So we made plans to totally transform every single inch of the backyard!

Backyard LAYOUT & CONSTRUCTION
We started the process by creating a new layout for the backyard space. We said goodbye to the old patio and grass – and hello to a new area with multiple zones for dining, cooking, entertaining, and lounging. Working with Standard Design Group, we demoed the existing patio, added new hardscaping, made plans for a stylish new fountain, and brought in a staircase that would lead to 2 new zones in the sloped portion of the backyard. There would soon be a designated dining area, a big outdoor kitchen, and three different areas to relax and unwind! (Keep scrolling to see a few pics of all the progress.)

Backyard LANDSCAPING
For landscaping, we partnered with Orca to create a lush plan and add lots of plantings on the hillside, and an array of potted plants as well. Bringing in lots of greenery was also a way to add drama and interest with different colors and textures of green. Existing eucalyptus and fruit trees would play backdrop and shady cover for a mix of ferns and low groundcover plants. For the large terracotta and textured pots on the lower level of the backyard, we opted for a textural mix of Yucca Rostrata, Kalanchoe Beharensis, and Acacia. Climbing vines also created an “old world” look on the retaining wall, and trumpet vines would soften the columns of the pergola.

Backyard AFTER

Talk about a transformation! The backyard went from outdated eyesore to a total oasis. Starting from the ground up, we added large inset pavers with gravel that define the dining area with a gorgeous table from Sutherland and the kitchen area. (Bobby’s tip: using gravel that’s almost the same color adds texture and pattern without that pattern becoming all you can see!) The brick retaining wall got a coating of brushed concrete for a Mediterranean feel, and the new and improved fountain features a graphic black and white Spanish tile. On the far end, the new staircase now leads you up to 2 additional levels: a gorgeous shaded pergola and luxe seating area complete with Sutherland chairs and sofa, string lights, and a firepit!

Front Exterior: BEFORE
But wait, there’s more! The front of our HQ was also in need of a design re-do. As you may recall, the exterior was stuck in the 70s, with dated garage doors, old windows, and underwhelming landscaping. So it was time to bring it into the future – and add some serious curb appeal! Keep on scrolling to see how it all went down.

Front Exterior: AFTER
New black frame Marvin windows were a big upgrade that contrasted beautifully with the freshly painted white exterior (we went with Snowbound from Sherwin Williams). Since the garage doors are already prominent, it only made sense to make them as beautiful as possible. Carriage House Doors offered handsome wood doors with a rustic but refined feel, adding the perfect touch of texture and lighter, warm tones. Some new plantings and wood retaining walls also add to the exterior appeal. Overall, the front exterior is a stylish mix of modern and Spanish, and just as eye-catching as the backyard!
